How Cannabis is Changing Social Gatherings and Events

Something has definitely changed in most American social gatherings. Alcohol consumption among American adults is now at an all-time low, with only 54% reporting that they drink alcohol, as per the 2025 Gallup Poll. For most of the gap that has been created, cannabis has filled, even moving from the back patio to the front at social gatherings of dinner parties, cookouts, and game nights. Cannabis has even changed in how it is brought to social gatherings. Custom-made cannabis packaging has shifted people’s perceptions of the product from thinking it is thoughtlessly brought to games in a Ziploc bag to now thinking that the host brought it in a custom-designed cannabis packaging, so they came prepared.

Cannabis as an Alcohol Alternative

Cannabis has even made its way to social gatherings that are traditionally alcohol- and/or smoke-free, in the form of THC seltzers. Since cannabis is now socially acceptable to bring to the gathering, and is even brought in custom-designed packaging, the coolers at the gatherings are now packed with seltzers that have THC in them, just like alcohol. THC beverages made a huge jump of 15% in sales in 2025, and some experts predict that the THC beverage industry could be worth $2.8 billion by 2028. The term “California sober” has become a mainstream term, and it even seems that sobriety from alcohol and cannabis is now the case for a huge part of the American population. The term seems to be heavily oriented towards the Gen Z population, with almost half of them claiming to identify as sober, and with a lot of American adults also placing themselves in the same category.

Low-dose options range from 2.5 to 5mg per serving. While these can be helpful at social gatherings for attendees with no prior cannabis experience, they can be convenient to hosts as well. For a clear, transparent cannabis consumption zone, hosts can utilize a product’s original custom weed packaging. For the host, low-dose formats clearly labeled and separated within the drinks paraphernalia packaging will help set the standard and eliminate confusion.

Packing Design Has Become a Ritual

Flexible Intentionality is the new norm when it comes to hosting with cannabis. This has been likened to the world of thoughtfully selecting and serving wine. The arrival of cannabis in high-quality custom weed packaging has been noted by guests. Quality packing design has strain, potency, and terpene profiles. The above-mentioned study (Brown University, 2025) found that cannabis use in social settings was linked to a decrease in alcohol use. In many cases, these two have not been used together; rather, they have been used in combination.

Custom weed packaging also serves as a silent and social form of marketing. The legal cannabis market has made it standard to expect product packaging to use premium, sustainable materials and to be clear about dosing. Hosts have fulfilled a market expectation in bringing curated cannabis to social settings.

From Living Rooms to Licensed Lounges

The social infrastructure surrounding cannabis has advanced. Massachusetts implemented social consumption legislation in late 2025. By mid-2025, New Jersey had its first consumption area permits. California revised its legislation to permit licensed lounges to serve food and have live entertainment. Cirrus Social Club in Denver has already set the precedent of a cannabis lounge that is an upscale alternative to a traditional drinking establishment.

As more spaces are regulated, demand for more sophisticated packaging design increases. Custom weed packaging for licensed lounges needs to strike a balance between compliance, brand identity, and consumer understanding. This is the direction the industry is headed, one meeting at a time.
